Top 10 Best Selling Cars in September 2016; Baleno Reports 10,623 Units

The leading car company, Maruti Suzuki has continued its domination in the Indian market with the six models out of top 10 selling cars in the last month. The company’s market share is increased to 49.5 percent with the highest response received for the premium and new models. The September month sales structure is highlighted with the Maruti Suzuki’s six models, out of which the top four positions locked by the Alto, Swift Dzire (sedan), Swift and Wagon R.

Alto is the top 1 selling model with the highest sales of 27,750 units and reported the growth of 34 percent compared to 20,658 units in September 2015. The sub-compact sedan, Swift Dzire has 4 percent decline in the last month and positioned in second place with 18,961 units.

The Swift hatchback encountered 8 percent decline in sales and occupied the third position while the Wagon R small hatchback in fourth place with the 12 percent of sales growth against the year-ago month sales.

Hyundai’s Grand i10 model has occupied the fifth position with the 12,212 units of sales in September 2016 while the company’s Elite i20 hatchback holds eight position with 10, 254 units. The fifth position occupied by the Maruti Suzuki Baleno with sales of 10,623 units in the Indian market. Being a premium hatchback, Baleno has crossed the Hyundai Elite i20, which is one of the best-selling hatchbacks in India.

The Renault Kwid smallest car is reported at 10,558 units and occupied the seventh position. The ninth and tenth places engaged by the utility vehicles, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and Hyundai Creta respectively. With the sales of 9,375 units in September, the Vitara Brezza has crossed the 50,000 unit’s sales mark in just less than seven months.

The Hyundai Creta has launched a year back and played a key role in the compact UV segment with the highest demand in the country. The Hyundai’s UV endured 21 percent sales growth with sales of 8,835 units. Hyundai Company has obtained 15.4 percent market share and placed in the second slot ahead of Mahindra & Mahindra.

This time, the Maruti Suzuki Celerio and Ciaz hybrid missed out from the list of top 10 selling cars in the month of September 2016. Even though, the list is highlighted with the Maruti Suzuki cars followed by the Hyundai cars.

Starting month of 2017, January registered good sales in the passenger vehicle segment and the top 10 selling cars have achieved positive growth. After many years, this is the first time top 10 cars have good sales in January 2017. As usually, Maruti Suzuki highlights the list of top 10 selling cars with seven cars, including Alto, Swift Dzire, Wagon R, Swift, Celerio, Baleno and Ciaz.

In the list of top 10 cars, almost all cars have posted double-digit growth. Maruti Alto occupies the first position with sales of 22,998 units and reported seven percent digit growth compared to the year-ago period sales, 21,462 units. The Swift Dzire with 18,088 units, Wagon R with 14,930 units and Swift with 14,545 units posted 29% growth, 17% growth and 3% growth respectively.

The fifth position occupied by the Hyundai Grand i10 with sales of 13,010 units in the last month. The model has 31% growth compared to the sales in January 2016 were 9,934 units. Again, the Maruti Suzuki Celerio and Baleno have reported 52% and 36% growth and occupied sixth and seventh places with the overall sales of 10,879 units and 10,479 units correspondingly. An interesting news is the Celerio outsold the Maruti Baleno after nine months in the PV segment.

Hyundai sold 10,010 units of the Elite i20 hatchback in the month of January 2017 and the model reported 4% growth against year-ago period sales, 9,604 units. The smallest vehicle, Renault Kwid has 16% growth in the last month with the sales of 6,924 units.

With the introduction of SHVS – smart hybrid technology, the Ciaz sales were increased in January 2014 and occupied in 10thposition. The Ciaz hybrid is becoming as the tenth best-selling vehicle and reported 20% growth in terms of sales compared to previous period. This is the first car in India introduced by the SmartPlay touch-screen infotainment system and SHVS in the country.

The Indian passenger cars have seen negative sales in the last month of the previous year due to demonetisation – ban of Rs. 1000 ad Rs. 500 notes in India. The three automakers highlighted in the list, Maruti Suzuki India with six models, Hyundai Motor India with three models and Renault India with one model. The ban of notes has impacted the sales of two-wheelers, large SUVs and commercial vehicles in the country.

In the list of top 10 selling cars, all models except Hyundai Eon, Renault Kwid and Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, have registered negative sales. Maruti Suzuki Alto dominates the list with sales of 17,351 units in the last month. But, the Alto small car has seen negative sales in December 2016 compared to 22,589 units in December 2015.

Maruti Suzuki cars including Dzire, Swift and Wagon R have occupied second, third and fourth slots with sales of 14,643units, 14,538 units and 14,176 units respectively. The Hyundai Grand i10 is the fifth selling car in the last month and registered 10,519 units. Hyundai has sold 12,749 units of Grand i10 in December 2015 and delivered 1lakh units (1,07,811 units).

Maruti Suzuki sold 9,486 units of Baleno hatchback, premium car sold via the NEXA network. It was registered 10,572 units in December 2015. The smallest car Renault Kwid occupied the seventh place in December 2016 with the sales of 8,797units.

The highest-selling hatchback, Hyundai Elite i20 holds 8,450units in the previous month and there was a difference between around 900 variants difference compared to the sales in the year-ago period. The next places (9th and 10th) occupied by the Maruti Celerio and Hyundai Eon with sales of 7,189 units and 6,790 units. After nine months, Hyundai Eon enters in the list of top 10 selling cars.

Top 10 Best-Selling Passenger Cars in July 2016

The Indian automotive industry witnessed the positive number of sales in the last month with the good monsoon. Maruti Suzuki India reported 13.9 percent growth with 1,25,778 vehicles, Hyundai has 12.9% growth and Mahindra was reported to 20 percent growth. Similarly, the passenger car market has respectable sales with the new car launches and demand for utility vehicles in the Indian market.

Similar to the April and June months, Maruti Suzuki models are the top 4 selling passenger cars in the last month, but the models witnessed for negative sales. Alto is the highest selling car reported the decline of 11 percent to 19,844 units, as against 22,212 sales in the year-ago period. Similarly, the total July sales of Swift Dzire, Wagon R and Swift declined to 2%, 2% and 26% respectively, compared to the sales in July 2016.

Hyundai sold 11,961 units of Grand i10 in the last month, a growth of 38% compared to the corresponding month sales of the previous year. The new products Renault Kwid and Baleno hatchback are the 6th and 7th best-selling cars. The best hatchback, Hyundai Elite i20 has seen a drop of 18 percent with the entry of Baleno hatchback.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz has the noticeable growth of 146 percent in the Indian market with 5,162 units, as against 2,099 units in July 2015. The outstanding sales received by the Maruti Ciaz with the introduction of hybrid variants and the product influenced to the segment growth. Along with the Ciaz, Maruti Suzuki Celerio has 0.1 percent growth with 7,792 unit’s sales.

The 7 products in top 10 selling cars are from the Indian leading carmaker, Maruti Suzuki, two cars from Hyundai and 1 from Renault. The Honda cars, Mahindra cars, Toyota cars, as well missed from the list in the last month. Except the Ciaz, whatever the best selling cars in June are the top selling cars in July, but the models exchanged the positions.

Maruti Suzuki, country’s top carmaker has witnessed for the major drop in the segment of passenger vehicles, including SUVs, compact cars, sedans, MPVs, in the last month. After many years, the company was confined to first two positions in the list of top 10 selling cars in June 2016. There was a reason behind this is the company’s largest auto-component supplier, Subros Limited was damaged with the short circuit.

The Alto and Swift Dzire models obtained first and second positions respectively, even though the models received the low sales in the passenger car market. Maruti Suzuki sold a total of 15,750 Alto cars in the last month and representing a drop of 25% from sales in June 2015, 21,115 units. Similarly, the Swift Dzire sales drop by 29 percent in June 2016 compared to last year. Maruti Suzuki sold a total of 21,886 units of Dzire, best-selling sedan, in June 2015.

All Maruti Suzuki cars received a double-digit decline in the previous month, Wagon R has 10 percent drop in the sales of 11,962 units in the last month, against 13,221 units in June 2015. The Swift, popular hatchback, fell down to 6th position from the 3rd position with a 48 percent drop.

Hyundai’s Grand i10 sales grew by 41 percent in the previous month with 12,678units and the model ranked 3rd position in the list of best-selling cars. The Renault Kwid and Maruti Ritz enter the list with the sales of 9459 units and 4682 units and occupied 5th and 10th positions respectively. Moreover, the Celerio hatchback dropped to 9th position with 5,797 units sales in June 2016, from 7th position in the year-ago month.

Being a premium hatchback, the Baleno saw 6,976 unit’s sales, but the Elite i20’s y-o-y sales declined by 17 percent in the market. Elite i20, one of the Hyundai’s best-selling cars, had a drop of 24 percent in April and 17 percent in May.
