Maruti Suzuki’s new-generation Alto hits showrooms by 2019

With the success of locally made Vitara Brezza, the Japanese carmaker has been given a responsibility to its Indian unit of Maruti Suzuki for developing the new generation Alto. To strengthen the company’s hold in the entry level segment, Maruti Suzuki has taken greater responsibility. Before the Renault Kwid, the Maruti Suzuki Alto is the best-selling car in the small car segment. Currently, the Alto’s share has dropped to around 40% from 48% in the entry car segment, but the Renault Kwid managed to around 20 percent of the segment growth with the sales of 40,000 to 45,000 units in a month.

The current car market is emerging with the entry of new models so that the Indo-Japanese car maker has started work on the new-generation Alto, which will be coded as Y1K, according to the Economic Times. The upcoming Alto may feature the new crossover design to attract the next-generation young customers, who are looking for the best-in-class design as well as performance based models in the affordable price range.

The future generation Alto is going to be manufactured out of the Indian market as Maruti Suzuki has a strong market with the Maruti Baleno, Vitara Brezza and Ciaz models. Being a leading India carmaker, Maruti Suzuki will never neglect the requirements of prospective buyers as well as the current trends. The upcoming Alto car to be built on the technology based new platform to meet the new regulations.

The upgraded Alto is likely to be launched in the festival season of 2019 and priced between Rs 5 to Rs 12 lakh. As per the news, the carmaker will revamp the Wagon R small hatchback, codenamed as YCA and Celerio hatchback (YNC) in the coming three years. In the middle of 2015, the company has already announced that the 15 new products planned to launch in the Indian market by 2020.

The Alto sales down to around 19,000 – 20,000 units from 21,500 units in the last fiscal, on the other hand, Renault Kwid sales growth is emerging thus the company plans to speed up the development of Alto. Besides, Maruti Suzuki is considering the introduction of the mild-hybrid system in the petrol engine for the upcoming products, but the decision on the Alto Hybrid is yet to be finalised.

Like the Vitara Brezza and Baleno, the next-generation Alto is expected to be positioned in the similar market range in the future.
